Week ending 3 February
This weeks monitor counts showing most sites have dropped with the rain but Kumeroa remains high. It is important to remember counts can be highly variable between properties and even paddocks so please bring in a grass sample for testing prior to grazing previously problematic areas of your property.
Attached is a table summary of all the different methods of Zinc supplementation for each stock class, should your stock require protection as the season progresses.

Week ending 27 January
Hi everyone, with February around the corner it is time to start facial eczema monitoring!
Counts coming into the clinic have been rather varied, this is not surprising given the never-ending rain followed by more recent heat and so there is a real risk of hot spots of fungal spores “blooming” in these humid conditions.
It is important to have a preventative management plan in place as after several weeks of moderately elevated spore counts there is a real risk of accumulative subclinical liver damage occurring in your stock. The most reliable way to protect your stock is by Zinc administration, this protects the liver from the sporedesmin toxin released by the fungal spores so will reduce liver damage and secondary signs of photosensitization. Minimising the number of spores ingested by your stock through pasture management and quality fungicides can also significantly reduce eczema symptoms.
Attached are the counts received so far, the counts will be updated and distributed weekly. As always if you would like an accurate paddock count please collect as outlined in the attached collection protocol.
